In-house Privacy Counsel

£55000 - £70000 per annum

A global law firm are looking for a Senior In-House Counsel to head up their internal Data Protection Office.

The ideal professional would be a lawyer from a similar organisation that has worked within a risk and compliance function with a strong focus on data privacy.

This is a FTC for 12 months to join the firm on a full-time basis in their Leeds office. There is the option to work on a part-time basis or have flexible working hours.

You will be working with the lawyers and other colleagues around the business to develop and implement effective policies and procedures and ensure compliance with new legislative and regulatory requirements.

Day to day of the role..

  • Ensure that all of the firm's legal and regulatory obligations are met and high standards are maintained across the business.
  • Advising the firm on various risk and compliance issues, including SRA and FCA regulatory compliance, data protection, business continuity, quality management systems, complaints and financial crime.
  • Manage the firm's Data Protection Office. The Data Protection Office manages all data subject right requests, data privacy impact assessments and data breaches.
  • Respond to day to day enquiries from the firm, clients and other third parties on confidentiality, data protection and information security.
  • Lead the ongoing development and roll-out training to the wider business.
  • Manage the review of/updates to the firm's policies, including working with others within to facilitate the development of new policies and guidance notes where necessary.
  • Assisting colleagues on projects to manage risk across the firm's network of offices (UK/International).
  • Actively participating in International Operations Team ("IO") initiatives, working with colleagues across IO to ensure the needs of the business are met.
  • Researching and advising on local law and local regulatory requirements, in respect of the firm's network of offices and assisting in the building of a due diligence structure to support the intended growth plans for the firm.

Skills and experience..

  • Strong technical lawyer.
  • Strong privacy, commercial and financial awareness, demonstrable when providing technical advice.
  • Adopts a pragmatic and innovative approach to meeting client/business needs.
  • Experience of undertaking international projects and familiarity with international governance structures.
  • A passion for data protection, risk and compliance.
  • Proven ability to think independently, contribute to projects and confidently engage with and influence colleagues at all levels.
  • Experience of budget ownership.
  • Excellent level of IT and systems literacy.
